Back To The Bike
*** continued from previous post ***
Mom stood and stretched. She walked over to the doors to the deck and looked down into the wallow. "You know it's funny. But there still aren't any moose or any other animals using the mud."
Even though I couldn't see her face, I knew that her brow was furrowed with concern. "Do you think they're okay?"
"Who," I said, "the moose?"
"Yeah," Mom replied. "I just hope nothing has happened to them."
I could see where this was going and I needed to divert her attention ASAP. Otherwise, I would find myself on a moose rescue party, beating the woods and brush for a hint of dewlap.
Now I'm not proud of this next fact but I think you'll appreciate where I was coming from.
It was simple - Mom was worried about the moose. I wanted to take a ride and possibly, just possibly, see another bear. If I played my cards right I knew victory was in my grasp.
"Tell you what babe. If the weather holds maybe we'll pop out on the bike - just for a bit, and see if we can't find them. I'm sure they’re around here somewhere."
Mom studied the clouds. "If it's not raining a little trip might be nice."
It was like taking candy from a baby.
I know! I'm a bastard. But a clever one.
Mostly.
