"Pleased to meet you," I said and offered my hand to Robert which he promptly took and pumped out the very definition of a business handshake. Strong and with just the right amount of 'shaking'.
You would be surprised what a vanishing art form the handshake has become. I myself am personally responsible for contributing to its demise by licking my palm before every shake. Nothing says 'business' like a wet, clammy hand. I also make my wrist and arm go limp. It's a joy to see the look of revulsion on a guy’s face.
See sweetie, it's the simple things in life that make it all worthwhile.
"Nice to meet you," Robert said as your mom and his wife exchanged greetings.
We took our seats at the table, and busied ourselves with the ritual of morning. So far so good. They seemed like nice folks. It took me a bit to get seated and settled owing to the fact that I had been cold and wet a few days before, and now my joints were . . . protesting. I'd fire their asses, but it's so hard to get good cartilage these days.
And here again was the issue of the biker with the cane. It's interesting to see people's reactions. Some act embarrassed by their own good health. Some go so far to ignore my condition that it becomes painfully obvious that they are ignoring my condition. Robert and Jackie looked embarrassed and empathetic. Good. I could work with that. See, they could refute our ride but they couldn't refute the fact that whatever was going on with me physically, it obviously took a hell of a lot to crawl into that saddle each day. Something that most take for granted.
Ha! Two points for me!
"So," I said with a calculated and warm smile, "I take it that is your BMW in the parking lot.
"Very nice bike." Which I actually meant. His BMW was beautiful.
“Thanks. You're riding the. . .?"
"Victory Vision," I answered.
